Baltimore’s Longest March Streak of Freezing Minimum Temperatures

Baltimore’s Longest March Streak of Freezing Minimum Temperatures

For the 23 consecutive days from March 5th to March 27th, 2018, the Baltimore Airport (BWI) had minimum temperatures reach ≤32° each day, the longest such record for that location with a period-of-record back to 1951, as well as for the prior downtown locations dating back to 1871 in the historical record. The Average Minimum Temperature for this 23-day period was 28.5°, with a low temperature of 23° on both the 10th and 11th of the month. The minimum temperature at the airport on March 28th was 41° so this streak ended at the 23 days. The current monthly total (also 23 days as the first 4 days of the month were not below freezing) is also the highest number of freezing March days since the 25 days (not consecutive) recorded in 1960, the current record holder.

The monthly Maximum/Minimum/Mean temperatures through March 28th are 47.1°/30.3°/38.7°, the Mean running a -4.4° departure from Normal. Though temperatures will be warming somewhat through the end of the month, they won’t be much above the average for this time of year so March will end up with quite a large below-Normal departure.
