Maryland’s Greatest 24-Hour Rainfall: Jan 26-27, 1897

This brief write-up of the greatest 24-hour precipitation amount in Maryland’s recorded history is from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “Maryland and Delaware Section of the Climate and Crop Service of the Weather Bureau” publication of July 1897 (currently, these reports are produced by the National Centers for Environmental Information under the title “Climatological Data – Maryland and Delaware”) .  Jewell, Maryland, is still a mostly rural area located in southernmost Anne Arundel County, near the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.  It also happens to be where my father grew up.
