Record-Wet 2018 Already for Several Maryland Locations

It has certainly been a wet year in the Free State, with several locations already exceeding their record-annual totals, mainly on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay. Some of these stations even have long-term periods-of-record so it’s not for lack of data that has allowed for the all-time totals. Here are the current National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Network and First-Order station totals as of this morning’s report (data either through the 13th or 14th, depending on how up-to-date the individual data entries are):

Maryland’s all-time wettest location for a calendar year is the 76.52″ that fell on Towson (Baltimore County) in 1971. The all-time wettest 12-month period (non-calendar year) is the 88.21″ that also occurred at Towson, covering the period July 1, 1971 through June 30, 1972. The drenching from former Hurricane Agnes in June 1972 was a large part of that total as Towson recorded 14.37″ in that month alone, though nearby areas to the west received up to nearly 20 inches. If the next 2 1/2 months can continue at a fairly wet pace, there’s a chance that the calendar-year record will be surpassed.
