The Baltimore Airport has recorded 2.22″ of rain today (as of the 5:00 P.M. EDT report), with a monthly total now of 6.31″ and bringing the annual total up to 51.57″ at this point in the calendar year. This latter value supersedes the previous record of 50.63″ through Sept. 18, 1889 when official Baltimore records were kept at Holliday & E Baltimore Streets (SW Corner) at the Neal Office Building, near City Hall. The all-time full Calendar-Year record for Baltimore is 62.66″ in 2003.
UPDATE: For the Washington, DC long-term record, National Airport is currently in 3rd place for the 2018 calendar year through Sept. 22nd at 47.64”, behind the 50.42” in 1886 and 49.87” in 1889 (period of record back to 1871).

Wow! That’s pretty crazy… and those weather records go back a long time. I wonder if we’ll break the record. The Climate Prediction Center keeps Baltimore wetter than normal through the new year.

Hey Charlie! Yes, they have quite a lengthy record (back to 1871). They would have to average a bit over 3″ for each of the next 3 months to break the all-time calendar-year record – certainly doable.
Baltimore actually has pre-NWS precipitation data back to 1817, though I don’t know the reliability of that info. (and I haven’t checked that data for the same time period as this blog article). However, it does bring an idea of the historical weather for over 200 years: http://marylandclimateandweather.weathertogether.net/baltimore-maryland-historical-precipitation-archive-1817-1870/
I just checked that historical data and no year from 1817-1870 came close to the current total in 2018!
Also, thanks for the 3-month graphic from the CPC!
